ENROLMENT INTO POST FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM IN URETHRAL AND GENITAL RECONSTRUCTION
Training Program, Goals And Objectives
The goal of our Post fellowship programme is to provide subspecialty training in Urethral and Genital Reconstruction. The Post-Fellowship Program has been designed to help Fellows refine their surgical skills in Urethral and Genital Reconstruction to function as a valued member of Genitourinary Reconstructive Societies, globally. Fellows will acquire more specialized expertise that complement their residency training.
The objectives are:
- To assist fellows develop competence in surgical techniques of anterior and posterior urethroplasty;
- To train fellows in the evaluation, decision making and surgical management of adults and children with uretheral anomalies and trauma
- To acquire surgical skills necessary in the reconstruction of a variety of intersex conditions.
They will also have opportunity to participate in research on individuals with disorders of sex development, for which the Institute has a grant
MODE OF DELIVERY
- Full and active participate in evaluation of patients and decision making
- Clinical meetings and discussions, conferences, lectures and seminars on relevant anatomy of the genitalia and urethral substitutes, tissue engineering and future of urethral reconstruction
- Fellows will actively participate and develop competence in surgical procedures including, but not limited to, Urethrotomy and other Minimally Invasive Interventions for Urethral Stricture, Current Anterior urethroplasty, Posterior Urethroplasty, Feminizing genitoplasty, metoidioplasty, Colovaginoplasty , Gonadectomy& Hysterocolpectomy, Hypospadias repair, and Vesico-Vaginal Fistula repair
- Trainees surgery recording will be encouraged for video reviews with the trainers
- Fellows are required to participate in at least 1 clinic day and 1 operation session per week, academic meetings and must present 2 seminars on contemporary issues relevant to the training before completion
- There will be opportunity of DSD and tissue engineering research and publication
POST-FELLOWSHIP FORMAT
- Has a duration of 12 consecutive months – starting in July
- Training is full time
- Fellows will register with the Institute and the Teaching Hospital and will be required to sign an undertaking to abide by regulation of the training and the Hospital
EVALUATION
Successful fellows must be fully documented at the Institute and The Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital. A log book will be made available to fellows. Evaluation throughout the Fellowship period will include Formal oral evaluations every 3 months throughout the course of the training year. These evaluations will include an active discussion of the evaluation itself, and the Fellow’s areas of strength and weakness. Any serious concerns discussed with the Fellows will be addressed. Fellows are expected to keep a logbook of procedures assisted and performed. The trainee may be asked to disengage if he/she does not meet the requirement satisfactorily as judged by a panel of assessors and this will be dully communicated to the primary employer.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Selection is competitive and open to Urologists who have met the following requirements
- Applicants should not be more then 50 years by 1st July of the enrollment year
- Must possess Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College, or the West African College of Surgeons or an equivalent qualification
- Registration with Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and an active practicing license
- Letter from applicant outlining professional goals and how this Fellowship meets those goals
- Curriculum Vitae
- Two Letters of Recommendation, one of which must be from a Fellow in in Urology
- Letter of sponsorship for supernumerary post fellowship training from primary employer. This is a supernumerary training and prospective fellows most show evidence of employment
